Overnight in Ceduna

Itinerary for Oyster Lovers

Day one: Arrival in Ceduna and oyster tasting

Option 1:

If you arrive in Ceduna and check into your accommodation by the late afternoon, then you may only have time and energy to treat yourself to a meal before bed. If this is the case, then make sure that you head to The Oyster Barn for dinner. Whether you want to try their oysters or famous King George Whiting, you won’t be disappointed. The Oyster Barn holds the title for the Ceduna Community Voted King George Whiting Dish 2020 and the Ceduna Community Voted Oyster Dish 2020 which are a couple of big ‘thumbs up’ recommendations from the local community, and they ought to know. They don’t stay open late so make sure you get in quick. You’ll find them on the Eyre Highway at Ceduna’s Western Entrance near the Fruit Fly Inspection Point. The opportunity to get a photo with Ceduna’s oyster sculpture is in the same car park as Ceduna Oyster Barn, why not grab a pic. for the trip album while your tea cooks.

Option 2:

However, if you arrive in Ceduna with a bit more time up your sleeve then you’ll want to make sure you book yourself into the Sunset Oyster Session Tour at SA Premium Oysters in Smoky Bay. On this tour, you can get to learn more about the oyster growing community and enjoy beautiful 360° views across the bay with a tasting plate of fresh oysters and glass of wine. It’s the ultimate experience in Ceduna for oyster lovers and is just a 44km detour south from town. This is also a great option if you’re travelling towards Ceduna along the Flinders Highway, a detour into Smoky Bay for the Sunset Oyster Tour before travelling the final 30-minute stretch to your Ceduna accommodation will be well worth it for the photos and the memories, not to mention oysters as fresh as you can get!

Option 3:

If you’re travelling along the Flinders Highway from Ceduna to Port Lincoln then it’s best to stop in at Smoky Bay on your way. Travelling to Port Lincoln only takes about 4 hours and there is much to see along the way, Smoky Bay, and specifically, the Smoky Bay Oyster Farm Tour is certainly not to be missed. This tour takes you out on the barge to their leases where you can learn from an oyster farmer about the growing process. You can also learn how to properly shuck an oyster and enjoy oyster at their very best – right from the pristine water in which they are grown, and remember to purchase a few dozen to take away with you for later, after all, you are in the Oyster Capital of Australia and when in Rome …!
